Riesling Clos Sainte Hune

Trimbach
Imagine a tiny 1.67-hectare plot in Hunawihr, farmed by the same family since 1626, sitting on limestone soils that give this wine its famous backbone. The 2020 vintage shows what a warm, generous year can do here: ripe citrus, white peach and that unmistakable flinty, saline edge that only this parcel delivers. Fermented dry in the house's classic style, with no oak and no fuss, it's pure Riesling at its most precise. Drink it now with turbot or langoustines, or tuck it away — it'll reward you for twenty years or more. One of Alsace's true legends.

Wine name: Riesling Clos Sainte Hune

Vintage: 2020

Producer: Maison Trimbach, Ribeauvillé

Grape varieties: Riesling 100%

Region: Alsace, France

Appellation: AOC Alsace

Vinification method: Hand-harvested grapes from the 1.67-hectare Clos Sainte Hune plot within the Rosacker lieu-dit; gentle whole-bunch pressing, settling of the juice, slow temperature-controlled fermentation in neutral stainless steel vats, no malolactic fermentation, no oak, extended ageing on fine lees before an unusually long bottle ageing in the cellars of Ribeauvillé prior to release

Maceration: None; direct pressing of whole clusters without skin contact

Colour: Bright pale gold with green-tinged highlights and a crystalline sheen

Bouquet: Intense and precise, opening on lime zest, white peach and yellow grapefruit, followed by white flowers, crushed stone, flint and a discreet hint of honey and petrol typical of great Riesling

Palate: Dry and taut, with a saline, chalky attack, a dense yet weightless mid-palate of citrus and orchard fruit, razor-sharp acidity framed by the limestone minerality of the site, and an exceptionally long, tense, stony finish

Alcohol content: 13% vol.

Soils: Muschelkalk limestone and dolomite with a shallow, stony topsoil, south-east facing slope at around 270 metres altitude

Farming: Sustainable viticulture, manual work in the vineyard, grass cover between rows, no insecticides, very low yields (around 40 hl/ha)

Ageing potential: 20 to 40 years, ideally from 2028 onwards

Food pairing: Lobster with butter sauce, turbot or sole meunière, scallops, sushi and sashimi, poultry in cream sauce, veal sweetbreads, mature Comté or Munster

Serving temperature: 10 to 12 °C, decanted for young bottles
