Martin Lapalus
🍇 Martin Lapalus — Northern Rhône craftsmanship in every bottle
Some winemakers talk a lot. Martin Lapalus lets his bottles do the talking. Working the steep granite slopes of the Northern Rhône, he crafts wines that feel honest, lively and beautifully drinkable — the kind you open on a Tuesday and still remember on Friday.
⛰️ A terroir carved into the hillside
Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage sit on either side of the Rhône, and you can taste the difference. Saint-Joseph clings to sharp granite terraces where the vines have to fight for every drop — that struggle gives wines with real tension, peppery lift and a mineral backbone. Crozes-Hermitage, spreading across gentler pebbly and clay-limestone ground, brings rounder fruit, softer curves and a generous, sun-warmed character. Martin works both with the same care, letting each plot say its piece.
🍷 The grapes behind the glass
Syrah is the star here, and it shines: blackberry, violet, crushed black pepper and that smoky, almost savoury edge the Northern Rhône does better than anywhere. For the whites, Marsanne and Roussanne take over, giving you white peach, honeysuckle and a rich texture that still finishes fresh. No heavy make-up, no over-oaking — just fruit, stone and sunshine.
🌿 Working with the land, not against it
Hand harvesting, low yields, gentle extraction and ageing that respects the fruit rather than smothering it. Martin Lapalus farms with a light touch, because wines this expressive only happen when the vineyard is in good health. The result is elegant, precise and full of energy.
🥩 What to pour it with
A Saint-Joseph Syrah loves grilled lamb, duck breast or a peppercorn steak. The Crozes-Hermitage is friendlier still — charcuterie, roast chicken, a good cheese board. And the whites? Try them with creamy fish dishes, poultry or a simple goat's cheese. Honestly, they're just as good on their own.
