La Soufrandière / Bret Brothers

🍇 La Soufrandière / Bret Brothers — Burgundy's White Wine Rebels

If you've ever wondered what Chardonnay tastes like when nobody gets in its way, this is where you find out. The Bret brothers run their family estate in the Mâconnais, down in southern Burgundy, and they've built a reputation for making white wines with real nerve, real salt and a sense of place you can taste from the first sip.

📍 Where it all happens

The heart of it is La Soufrandière, the family vineyard at Vinzelles, sitting on limestone slopes just below the famous Roche de Solutré. This corner of the Mâconnais gets more sunshine than northern Burgundy, so the grapes ripen beautifully — but the chalky soils keep everything fresh and tight. That balance of ripe fruit and bright mineral bite is the signature you'll recognise again and again.

🌿 Farming the honest way

The estate has been biodynamic since the early 2000s, certified and committed. No shortcuts, no heavy-handed winemaking. Native yeasts, gentle pressing, long ageing on lees, barely any sulphur. The idea is simple: healthy grapes, then let them speak. You'll notice it in the texture — these wines have a depth and a vibrancy that mass-produced Burgundy just can't match.

🍾 The grapes and the names

Chardonnay is the star here, shining through Pouilly-Vinzelles, Pouilly-Fuissé, Viré-Clessé, Saint-Véran and Mâcon-Villages — think white peach, citrus zest, crushed stone and a long, saline finish. Alongside the family estate, the brothers also run Bret Brothers, a négociant arm where they buy grapes from like-minded growers across the region and vinify them with exactly the same care. You'll also find a little Gamay from Beaujolais and some Aligoté in the mix, both bursting with energy.

🥂 Why you'll love them

These are white wines that work brilliantly at the table — with seafood, roast chicken, creamy cheeses or just on their own with good company. They drink wonderfully young but also age with real grace. For the quality in the bottle, the value is genuinely hard to beat. Pour a glass and you'll see why sommeliers across the world keep coming back to this family.
