Nuits-Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges Domaine Henri Gouges

A monopole jewel from one of Burgundy's most respected families, this 2008 comes from a walled plot planted on clay-limestone soils just below the village. The Gouges family has farmed here for generations, working the vines organically and letting the fruit do the talking. Whole-bunch restraint, a gentle extraction and patient ageing in mostly older oak give a wine of real poise: dark cherry, wild strawberry, forest floor and a touch of crushed stone. The tannins have softened beautifully with time, leaving a long, savoury finish. Pour it with roast duck, mushroom risotto or a mature Comté and enjoy a true classic.
