Domaine Belluard

🍇 Domaine Belluard — Savoie's Mountain Wine Legend

If you've never tasted a wine from the Haute-Savoie, Domaine Belluard is the place to start. Tucked away near Ayze, in the shadow of the Mont Blanc massif, this estate has spent decades proving that the French Alps can produce whites with as much character and tension as anywhere in the country. One sip and you'll understand why sommeliers across the world quietly fight over every bottle.

⛰️ A Terroir Shaped by Glaciers

The vines here grow on steep slopes at around 500 metres of altitude, rooted in limestone scree and glacial deposits left behind thousands of years ago. Cool mountain air, big day-to-night temperature swings and plenty of sunshine give the grapes slow, steady ripening — which is exactly what you want for freshness and that unmistakable saline, stony edge. Add biodynamic farming, horse ploughing and concrete eggs in the cellar, and you get wines that taste genuinely alive.

🥂 Gringet, the Star of the Show

Gringet is the estate's signature grape, and there are only a few dozen hectares of it left on the planet — most of them right here. It gives whites with white flowers, pear, citrus zest and a chalky, mineral finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. Belluard also works with Altesse (Roussette), bringing honeyed depth and richness, and Mondeuse for those who want a peppery, mountain-fresh red with real bite.

🍾 Sparkling Wines Worth the Detour

Ayze is famous for its sparkling wines, and Belluard's bubbles are the benchmark. Fine, persistent mousse, bone-dry precision and that alpine freshness make them a brilliant alternative to Champagne — especially if you like surprising your guests with something they've never heard of.

🍽️ What to Pour It With

Think mountain cheeses, freshly caught lake fish, roast chicken or simply a plate of oysters. These wines are food-friendly without ever being boring, and the best bottles will happily age for a decade or more in your cellar.

Bottles are made in tiny quantities — if you spot one, don't wait around.

Ayse Méthode Traditionnelle Brut

Imagine a sparkling wine grown on steep slopes of glacial moraine and limestone, right at the foot of Mont Blanc. Here, the rare Gringet grape is farmed biodynamically by one of Savoie's most respected estates, where low yields and hand harvesting are simply the norm. The traditional method gives it fine, persistent bubbles and a beautifully taut, mineral edge. Expect aromas of white flowers, crisp pear, citrus zest and a hint of alpine herbs, all carried by a saline, chalky finish. Brilliantly dry and refreshing, it's perfect as an aperitif, with mountain cheeses or delicate seafood. A true Alpine original you'll want to discover.
